On My Block Review

On My Block is a lackluster Netflix show that does not deserve a season four and needs a cancellation for its upcoming season.

The Weekly Review

As I heard The Show 'On My Block' has now begun filming a season four, I was incredibly shocked by how such a horrible show could continue. Every season after the second atrocious season leaves discontent. The acting is subpar, and the casting is incredibly lackluster. At the risk of seeming like an agist, I can not stand when Netflix hires actors in their thirties to portray the life of a teenager. Severe age gaps between the young adults in the show to the more maturely aged ones create a lack of immersion. The problem isn't just the off ages but their horrible acting. For most of these actors, it's their first big-time show. But if their acting was good enough for another season, how come the actors only got a few roles outside the show? Although, there could be many reasons as to why they do not participate in other acting roles.

The poor storyline of 'On My Block' is based on a group of kids in a heavily ganged neighborhood trying to get out of their area's systemic problems. The group entails a gang member named Caesar Diaz, played by Diego Tinoco, his on-and-off girlfriend Monse Finnie, played by Sierra Capri, their investigative friend Jamal Turner played by Brett Gray, who aids the show, and their friend Ruby Martinez played by Jason Genao. The only character that stands alone because of how interesting and funny they are is Jamal. Everyone else's character is an annoying person who can't seem to get their life together, which is the basis of high school. Throughout the show, each character tries to develop their story, but the writing is entirely off.

The Character Jamal is funny, witty, and honestly the most relatable out of the group. Jamal is a high school student trying to keep his friend group from middle school together no matter what. He tries to get his friend Caesar out of a gang and fails. Jamal is always looking for a way to investigate things, and his best investigative track was RollerWorld. Jamal explores a money scheme called roller world to help his friends and him out. Jamal spent the whole entire first season trying to find that money, and when he did, it just created more problems. When Jamal found the money, he had to then frame his friend's rival gang, and then he had to appease a drug load. I understand the differences between a show and reality, but even that is far-fetched. The writers need to keep one tip in mind: KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID !!!

The Character Caesar Diaz's only personality trait is him trying to get out of a gang he felt he had to join because of his family. Caesar's storyline includes a battle of morality and ethics between rival gangs and drug lords. Although, on paper, this seems like a fantastic storyline, the execution of it is horrible. Caesar is a low-rank criminal who couldn't even kill a rival gang member resulting in another character's death. Therefore, why would a drug load want to spend their time with him instead of just killing him? Those very inconsistencies are why the plot doesn't thicken but revolts in itself.

The Character Monse Finnie is an annoying girl who had to deal with a life without their colorist mother, who later dies. Her biggest problems are her ex-boyfriend, Caesar, her dead mother, and whether she goes to a preppy boarding school or not. Monse did not always know who her mother was, but Monse opened up so much more when she searched for her. Out of Monse's whole storyline, I enjoyed how she had to find a mother who abandoned her because she was a colorist. Thus, allowing an already horrible plot to finally thicken.

Lastly, Ruby Martinez's only personality trait is that he is a short Latino teenager, and a girl he liked died in front of him. Ruby not moving past his crush's death showed how emotionally attached he was, which gave a sense of reality. But other than that, his character is meaningless to the show.

Overall the show is trash and doesn't need any further elaboration. The severe writing inconsistencies lead me to believe the writers should take a writing workshop on English. The Weekly Binge & Review rates it a harsh 3/10.
