Skinny V. Fatphobia?
Is skinny shaming just as bad as fatphobia?
Body shaming comes in many forms, but Skinny shaming is not the same as fat phobia. Yes, they are both terrible and should not be a comparison in this day and age. Yet, many opinions and facts vary about this topic.
To further dissect where each counterpart derives from is to look at the behavior of our society. Fat phobia has been prevalent in tv shows, social media, and in our own society. More teens are suffering from eating disorders in America than obesity, which shows how many more teens are afraid of being fat than anything else. According to SingleCare , ''Approximately 30 million Americans live with an eating disorder. (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders)''. But the Center for Disease Control and Prevention states, "The prevalence of obesity was 19.3% and affected about 14.4 million children and adolescents.'' The severe landslide in numerical data between those who suffer from eating disorders compared to those suffering from obesity exhibit the very point of why fat phobia is prevalent in society.
Skinny shaming is a horrible thing to go through, and I will not negate that. Being told to eat a burger, more fatty foods, and stop looking anorexic is severely damaging to anyone who has suffered through those statements. But fat-shaming is still worse because being told you will never be pretty because of how much you weigh or that you will not be a model for Victoria secret is even more damaging. Although I am comparing the two problems in society, we should stop comparing them and get to the root of the problem. Body positivity should be more than a trend but a way of life to correct the previous mistakes earlier decades imprinted on our society. Society is forever changing, so why can't we change this?
